This region was controlled at different points in history by the Hoysalas, Chalukyas, Vijayanagar, Nawabs, Maratha chieftain Murari Rao, Tipu Sultan, Nizam and eventually came under British rule after it was ceded to the British by the Nizam of Hyderabad.

With so many armies slicing each other up over Penukonda one can only expect this :

Penukonda is quaint little village (within the ruined ramparts of the fort) where – as the cliche goes – Hindus and Muslims live together peacefully…
