Cool Araku Valley

Araku Valley in Andhra Pradesh is the Ooty of the Vizagians. Barely 150 Kms away from the hot and humid coastal city the valley is a weekend getaway where the temperature dips appreciably.

One can reach there by road but it is customary to do the Train journey at least one way. The train chugs thorugh scenic landscapes and 50 odd tunnels. This rali line also happens to be the highest broad gauge track in the country climbing to an altitude of around 3000 Ft above MSL.

The early morning train arrives at Vizag Railway Station:

The train is so popular I had to hire an agent/coolie to capture a window seat, which he did by boarding the train before it even reached the station. The coaches were choc-a-bloc with tourists and within minutes of my sitting down in my ‘reserved’ seat I had couple of noisy kids climbing on to me to have a better look at the country side rushing past us.

No need to mention I didn’t get an opportunity edgewise to photograph anything while i was thus ‘handicapped’ during the 6 hour journey.

Araku Valley also is known to produce the best quality coffee in India.

Things to see at Araku – Tribal Museum,Botanical Gardens and on the drive back to Vizag a visit to Borra Cave complex is a must.
